Let me dwell in Your tent forever; Let me take refuge in the shelter of Your wings. Selah. ~Psalm 61:4
We often hear in the bible about God’s wings. Writer’s of the Psalms were especially fond of talking about his wings as a shelter; he who dwells beneath them would find shelter there.
Psalm 91:4 He will cover you with His pinions, And under His wings you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.
Deuteronomy 32:11 “Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, That hovers over its young, He spread His wings and caught them, He carried them on His pinions.
Psalm 17:8 Keep me as the apple of the eye; Hide me in the shadow of Your wings.
Psalm 36:7 How precious is Your loving-kindness, O God! And the children of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.
Psalm 57:1 Be gracious to me, O God, be gracious to me, For my soul takes refuge in You; And in the shadow of Your wings I will take refuge Until destruction passes by.
Psalm 63:7 For You have been my help, And in the shadow of Your wings I sing for joy.
Jeremiah 49:22 Behold, He will mount up and swoop like an eagle and spread out His wings against Bozrah; and the hearts of the mighty men of Edom in that day will be like the heart of a woman in labor.
When I think of God’s wings, the Eagle was first to mind. After reading LeeAnn’s poem “Butterfly Wings” from the blog “Animals Are Feeling Beings Too”, I imagine that His wings come in many shapes and sizes, and are often more like the wings of His beloved butterfly as they touch every intimate detail of all our lives – human and non-human.
About AAFBT and LeeAnn:
LeeAnn Johnston, creator of and author at AAFBT is a beautiful writer, I especially enjoy her poems. For today’s blog post, I want to share with you this poem about butterfly wings and to introduce you to her and her blog.
A little backstory on me:
I spent most of my life trying to figure out what to do with my love for animals. I knew I wanted to do more than just love them and more than just work in a local shelter or clinic. I wanted to help ALL animals. Once I decided I wanted to advocate for them I educated myself on all kinds of animal abuse issues, and I have to tell you, it wasn’t easy. It was pretty disturbing to find out how animals are treated by the hands of humans. Sure your neighbor, your friend, and your local shelter are showing the loving side of the human & animal bond. But we must not forget there is a dark side, a really dark side. Nobody likes to hear about it or think about it. But by putting our head in the sand it is like we’re accepting it. We mustn’t accept it, but fight it. We are their voice.

BUTTERFLY WINGS
Oh you beautiful
butterfly
those wings can take you oh so high
Oh to have those butterfly wings
oh what joy they must bring
Oh butterfly with
wings so great
can you fly beyond the golden gate?
Please find my dear beloved sis
and give her a big butterfly kiss
Then can you fly
to all the farms
and let the animals feel loving arms?
Then fly to a shelter and calm the nerves
of all the animals without a home they deserve?
Can you stop by
those who have a home
but are mistreated and all alone?
For a while will you stop and play
to bring some joy to their day?
Those left in
scorching heat can you please
let your fluttering wings be their cool breeze?
For the ones always left on a chain
let your wings be their freedom to keep them sane
For those forced
to do tricks without a say
on your wings will you carry their sadness away?
And those who have no choice but to fight
can you take away their fear in your flight?
For all the ones
who lost track
with your wings can you lead them back?
Will you land right on their shoulder
and comfort the ones getting older?
On your great
journey through the sky
can you please be sure to stop on by
To wipe away all the people’s tears
who are helping animals through their years?
Oh butterfly you
are so many things
a little angel with beautiful wings
Who can be a messenger to let all know
how the savior does love them so
Oh butterfly then
you can land
right here on my very own hand
To wait to hear from him, the one
“my beloved butterfly, job well done”
